Class taught by half-Cambodian, half-Ukrainian dance facilitator Daniella Preap.
Cambodian traditional dance is a revered ancient art form that has persevered through significant challenges throughout its history. The dance is characterized by its slow and meditative nature, seamlessly blending simplicity with complexity, creating a captivating and authentic beauty that doesn't seek to impress others, but rather inspires them to find joy and embrace the essence of beauty.
In this workshop, Daniella aims to share the mesmerizing movements of Khmer classical dance and enrich them with contemporary dance techniques, creating a unique fusion that elevates the dance to a modern-day ritual for paying homage to our contemporary deities.
Participants will experience a journey through various aspects of Khmer dance. The workshop will begin with a Khmer dance warm-up, immersing everyone in the graceful and deliberate movements that lay the foundation of this traditional dance form. Gestures from the cycle of life will be explored, allowing participants to connect deeply with the cultural symbolism and storytelling present in Cambodian dance.
A small routine of classical Cambodian dance will be taught, enabling participants to experience the beauty and precision of this ancient art firsthand. Additionally, an improvisation task will encourage individuals to embody the spirit of the dance and express their interpretations of the dance's themes and emotions.
Furthermore, as a highlight of the workshop, Daniella will present a contemporary Khmer dance performance, showcasing the creative possibilities when blending tradition with modern expressions.
This workshop is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the artistry of Khmer dance, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, and creating a new form of spiritual expression that resonates with our modern world.
