The music of Vicente and Hughes' duo reflects a hyperfocused attention to dynamic and timbre, balancing complexity and simplicity in spontaneous composition. Folk forms emerge out of dark, tonal explorations. Both Vicente and Hughes possess unmistakably distinct voices on their respective instruments, are experienced practitioners of free improvisation and compose for other ensembles.
 
Luís Vicente and John Hughes began working together since 2018, starting in a sextet realizing the compositions of great South African Jazz emissaries such as Dudu Pukwana and Chris McGregor (Echoes of South Africa). In 2022 Hughes founded Gravelshard, a quartet comprised of the duo of Hughes and Berlin-based guitarist Olaf Rupp, and Vicente's duo with visionary percussionist Vasco Trilla (Gravelshard, Phonogram Unit PU24).
