Whereas the beautiful is limited, the sublime is limitless, so that the mind in the presence of the sublime, attempting to imagine what it cannot, has pain in the failure but pleasure in contemplating the immensity of the attempt. – Emmanuel Kant

In the work by Pernille transformation is connected to the aesthetics of the sublime and the pleasure of nothing is as expected. It is in the concept of the sublime beauty we find the excitement and thill of the unexpected and the level of complexity, where we are forced to make sense out of what we see. In this meeting with something different and new our perception can transform and expand, showing new ways how to perceive materials such as metal.

Transformation is a key inspiration in this exhibition and runs like a red thread through Pernille´s work. She is interested in the metamorphic phenome and the transformation where change is being made from on stage to another and is crossing over. Transformations happens all around us and is a part of our environment. In well-known materials such as brass, copper and steel the elements oxide and transform their physical appearance, when they are influenced by light, oxygen, water and polluting gasses. Investigating the chemical decomposing process and what causes the metals to oxide, has been the starting point in her work and has led to the development of a patination technique with textiles. When patinating metal a vivid spectrum of colors are exposed, leaving the metal surface with an abstract pattern and changed vivid colors, which evokes the eye, trying to grasp what it cannot immediately understand.

Danish designer and artist Pernille Rosendahl graduated from Kolding School of Design in 2019 and hold a degree in Bachelor of Arts in design. Pernille´s practice is based upon experimentation and curiosity towards materials and their potential within form, color and texture. Her works revolve around aesthetic, alchemy and existentialism. During her studies Pernille has acquired knowledge in different crafts mainly the field of metal, from her exchange to Sweden in 2018, where she studied metal-art at the university HDK-Steneby. After her exchange she went to Germany on an internship at Atelier Iron Age in Friesoythe with designer and blacksmith Alfred Bullermann.
